How bad is the pain of a migraine?
20.November, 2008
If you had to compare the pain intensity to something what would you compare it too. A broken bone, concussion, 3rd degree burn, getting stapped etc…
I have a friend that suffers from them and i'm wondering how bad it actually affects you.
Also does anyone have any methods of getting rid of one without taking meds?
There are really various intensity into migraine pain. Even as I suffer from the pain for 4 years now, the pain varies. Sometimes it hurts so badly, I just feel like jumping off the building to end all the pain, other times, it is not so painful- I can still manage to function like study and so on.
There are many other ways to get rid of a migraine. Some people sleep it though. I would if it is not too painful. I did try accupuncture. It did help but rather temporary. Some claim that traditional chinese medicine works. Others claim that "tui na" -chinese manipulative therapy often used in conjunction with acupuncture, moxibustion, fire cupping, Chinese herbalism, tai chi and qigong does the trick… Personally, I think that both are just temporary relief. But others feel that it helps, so to one's own peferences…

it's like having your head squashed on both sides by a trash compactor.

I've had a back injury that made me unable to move/walk for a while, it felt like there was an ice pick into my back/spine. Morphine barely helped this pain… I would rather deal with this than some migraines I've had.
If you're familiar with any basic carpentry tools… when it's bad, I want to take a C clamp and put it on my temples and crank it down tight as I can, and that is just to help the pressure I feel.
A migraine is very debilitating. Until you know what it feels like to have your brain swell up in the confined space of your skull, you don't really know what it's like… it's hard to compare this to anything.

Migraine Headache pain is unbearable. It's very very hard to think and carry on a normal life when someone suffers from this kind of pain. I suffer from headaches. I take tylenol and benedryl because I have allergy induced migraine headaches.
The key to keeping the pain in check is take medication before the pain starts. There are times where I had to go to the hospital to get IV medication injections to get the pain under control (That has happened to me only 2 or 3 times in the last 6 years). As I said. the key is keeping the pain in check.
I'm not sure of any non medication therapy your friend can try.
I would say getting a broken bone, getting stapped, or getting burned would be greater pain than headache pain.

Imagine someone hitting you in the temple with a sledgehammer on both sides of your head at the same time… over and over and over and over. When you have a migrane, its a severely throbbing, stabbing pain that is heightened by almost any movement you make. Simply turning your head too fast to look at something makes it worse. Looking towards light (sunlight, a lamp, anything) makes it throb worse. Bending over at your waist (say, to pick something up) makes it worse. Heaven forbid you need to cough or sneeze. GAD ZOOKS. Blinding pain. Often people become nauseous and even throw up from the pain. I personally have gotten nauseous but not thrown up (my cousin used to throw up from her migranes).
Like others have said, the key is to catch it early on. I don't like taking any medication whatsoever, but I do take 3 or 4 Extra Strength Excedrins (or the generic equivilant) THE MINUTE I feel one coming on. By no means does it get rid of the headache but it will usually keep it down to a dull throb (as opposed to a stabbing throb) long enough for me to make it home where I can turn out the lights, climb in bed for the evening and perhaps take a few more Excedrins to make it thru the night. I know its not good to take too many Excedrins and sometimes no matter WHAT you do, the pain just won't go away until its ready to go. In my case, my migranes usually start at the base of my neck and upper shoulders then run up the back of my head towards the front by my temples. In this case I use the "Icy Hot" strips that stick right onto your skin. I find they really help to relax the muscles which of course helps to relax the pain…
Hope this helps!
